Decorating For Christmas In Whites And Gold

Whether you are looking for living room or Christmas table inspiration, these elegant blue and white Christmas home decorating ideas are sure to add holiday spirit to your house.

Blue and White Christmas Home Decorating Ideas

I can't believe it! It's the beginning of December and my house is already decorated for Christmas! (In case you don't know me, this is a first!)

I would like to say that I was really organized and got it all planned and executed early this year…but that would be a bit of a lie.

The truth is that Olivia at Reinvented Collection is really organized…she got a great group of home decor bloggers together to put on a fabulous Christmas home tour blog hop this week…so I had a deadline.

I don't know this for sure (since I wasn't the one trying to get everyone together), but I think getting a bunch of bloggers to do anything at the same time is a bit like herding cats…Olivia had her work cut out for her!

However, she succeeded and I'm thrilled to be part of the It's A Wonderful House Christmas Hop. With so many beautiful homes to tour, I hope you have found a comfy seat, filled up your mug and are ready to stay for a while 🙂

If you are visiting from Sue's place at A Purdy Little House, welcome! Of course, if you are one of my regular readers or just happen to be stopping by, you are most welcome, too!

Now…on with the tour!

Have you ever had one of those times when you are supposed to be decorating for a holiday or event but you have no idea what you're going to do?

That was me with my Christmas decorations this year. I just couldn't come up with anything that inspired me. I looked through all of my previous year's Christmas pictures, searched every where on Pinterest, and browsed ALL of the catalogs that came in the mail (and I get A LOT of catalogs!)…still nothing…

blue and white living room

So I decided to take the easy way out, and go with my sure-fire way to have Christmas decorations that look great. Match the colors to the decor of the room.

Since the main living area of my house is blue and white, I took that idea and ran with it!

And decided while I was at it…Why not incorporate my favorite blue and white ginger jars? I LOVE those jars! Now I had some inspiration!

Start with lights

I have a confession to make. As much as I love Christmas ornaments, tablescapes, and garlands, my absolute favorite Christmas decorations are the lights!

Even when I was in college, I used to hang Christmas lights all around my dorm room, just because I loved the ambiance. (I'm sure my roommate thought I was crazy!)

White and blue outdoor Christmas lights

So when I start to decorate for any holiday, I always start with the lights.

Lots of white string lights with blue meteor shower lights (they are really cool!) and blue kaleidoscope flood lights set the tone outside.

The entry way

Feathers and string lights with candles and vases as Christmas decor on a console table during the day

The first of my blue and white Christmas home decorating ideas is an easy one!

In the front hall, I went with one of my favorites…white lights with white feather boas. (You can find some more easy and inexpensive Christmas decorations HERE).

The feathers almost look like snow on top of the console.

Glimmer lights look really magical at night. All of the little silver and glass balls add even more sparkle.

I used a bowl (turned upside down) as a stand to make the blue and white jar stand out…that's one of my go-to ways to make accessories work in spaces where they might not otherwise fit.

Faux fur pillows add some warmth to the bench in the front hall.

These monster-sized poinsettias really make the entrance feel like Christmas! (I got them at Costco for a REALLY reasonable price.)

The living room

When you walk in, this is the first room you see…the living room.

The fireplace mantel

For me, all of the living room Christmas decorations started with the mantel.

Last year, I did a post on ways to decorate your Christmas mantel when you have a TV above it. While I was researching I found a mantel that I absolutely LOVED from Regina Gust.

Since then, I have been dreaming about her mantel decorations all year!

So this year I was determined to make MY version of an over-the-top Christmas garland for my fireplace mantel.

Of course, I had to incorporate some blue and white ginger jar ornaments.  (Before someone mentions it…these were not cheap! But sometimes you have to splurge.)

Then I added all kinds of other interesting ornaments – blue poinsettia clips, pine cone picks and bird cage ornaments.

The blue and white ginger jar vases in the corners of the mantel help to add some height.

You can find the step-by-step instructions for how I put this mantel together HERE.

The Christmas tree

Of course, you can't have an over-the-top mantel without an over-the-top tree!

I used more of the same ornaments on the tree to create a cohesive look.

For the tree skirt, I pulled out the same piece of white faux fur fabric that I used for last year's white Christmas tree.

White cat under an all white Christmas tree

The only difference? Last year Chanel (one of my cats) claimed the fur as her cat bed.

This year Winston was having none of that! He settled in before the cats even knew the tree skirt was a cat bed option!

Using gold with the blue and white adds some glam to the tree.

It is definitely a focal point when you enter the living room. You can see more of this blue and white Christmas tree HERE.

The bookshelf Christmas decorations

Living room shelves with blue and white Christmas decor along the top

While the mantel and tree are definitely the show stoppers in the living room, I did add some other more subtle Christmas touches to some other areas.

Christmas garland with blue and white poinsettias on top of shelves

I added a store-bought garland to the top of the bookshelves, and then attached some more of the poinsettia clips* to tie it in with the mantel and tree.

Curly willow branches with plastic pearls

This centerpiece made of birch branches* and faux pearls* was left over from my Halloween party. Adding a glass reindeer (from TJ Maxx) in front of it adds some Christmas spirit.

Blue and white table top Christmas decor

Blue, white and gold candles with a christmas tree in the background

Decorations don't have to be complicated to look beautiful.

A collection of blue and white candles on top of a marble and gold tray* is all I used to dress up the coffee table in the living room.

Blue hydrangeas in a ginger jar with candle trees in the bakground

These hydrangeas were not part of the original design plan. But when I saw them at Costco, I couldn't resist!

The candle trees* in the background are another one of my go-to holiday decorating elements. You can dress them up or down for pretty much any occasion!

And the mirrored chargers* are another great way to add some depth to your holiday decor.

Reindeer stocking holders and evergreen branches on top of an armoire

Adding some evergreens (faux evergreens in this case) to the top of an armoire with some stocking holders* is another subtle way to add Christmas decor to your room.

Bird cages filled with gold and silver Christmas ornaments and surrounded by white lights

Filling up some bird cages* with ornaments adds some Christmas decor to the top of the armoire in the front hall.

This is another really easy (and inexpensive) to add some holiday spirit to any space in your home! And you can do it with pretty much anything that will hold ornaments…vases, bowls, jars…you get the picture.

Dining table Christmas decor

Blue, white and gold Christmas tablescape

I don't really have a dining room.

My whole main living area (dining room, kitchen and living room) is all one big open space.

Side view of a blue, white and gold Christmas table setting

So that usually means the tablescape co-ordinates with the living room decorations. (At least I don't have to make too many decisions about that!)

Top view of a blue, white and gold Christmas place setting

The glittered branch placemats add some texture (and sparkle) to the table.

I got them at Pier 1, so unfortunately, they're no longer available. But you can find plain twig placemats elsewhere and spray paint them gold if you want a similar look.

White velvet Christmas table runners laid across a blue tablecloth with blue, white and gold place settings on top of it

White velvet runners (another TJ Maxx find) laid across the table (rather than down it) help to define each place setting.

I love the embroidered design on the front! And the texture contrasts with the smooth, shiny satin tablecloth.

Yes, this is the type of tablecloth they use for weddings.

I like them when I'm having a lot of people over for a sit down dinner, for the same reasons that they're good for weddings. They're easy to clean and they're inexpensive. So you can just throw them out if someone knocks over a glass of red wine and stains them.

Blue, white and gold Christmas table setting with a deer as part of the centerpiece

When I saw the blue sparkle wine glasses at Pier 1 (no longer available), I just knew I had to have them!

Even though at the time, I didn't know what I was going to use them for. (If I love them, I know I'll find somewhere for them to go!)

Blue and white ginger jar table centerpiece on a Christmas tablescape

I "borrowed" the blue and white ginger jars from my office to use as a centerpiece…always shop your house before going out to buy new things!

Then added some gold Christmas ornaments and bits of cut-up evergreen garland down the center of the table with a couple of deer statues (another TJ Maxx find) on either end.

Fortunately, I already owned the rest of the table setting, so I didn't have to buy more tableware 🙂

Mixing and matching dishes makes them feel new even though they're not.

The buffet Christmas decorations

For the buffet, I spread some faux evergreen garlands and battery operated lights across the top.

Finally, I hung an ivory wreath above the buffet to brighten up the backdrop.

The kitchen bar

Blue and white table setting

I have a very small kitchen with limited counter space, so I never ending up decorating it.

But there is a raised counter bar between the kitchen and the dining area.

Adding some table settings there that co-ordinate with the dining area gives me room for extra guests, and helps to tie the whole room together.

Using my blue and white ginger jars as inspiration (and through out the room) made sure that everything tied together perfectly!
